LITIGATION MATTERS

Lead trial counsel defending a product liability claim against a large manufacturer of a pet containment systems. Plaintiff, who was represented by a large firm in Washington, D.C., alleged serious injury. After a four-day trial in Virginia Circuit Court, the jury rendered a defense verdict. Mr. Carlson also successfully defended the verdict on appeal.

Lead trial counsel defending a claim for fraud against a real estate agent and broker seeking $5 million in damages arising out of the sale of a luxury home. After a five-day trial in Maryland Circuit Court, the jury rendered a defense verdict. Mr. Carlson was also able to obtain an order requiring the Plaintiff to pay all of his clients' attorney fees and expenses.

Lead trial counsel defending one of the largest security corporations in the world in a lawsuit filed in Federal court seeking $4.75 million in damages arising out of an alleged sexual assault by a security officer. Mr. Carlson was able to gather evidence discrediting plaintiff's claims resulting in a favorable resolution of the case before trial.

Lead counsel representing the family of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a speeding car. Mr. Carlson was able to obtain a substantial settlement for the man's family without having to file a lawsuit.

Lead counsel defending one of the largest defense contractors in the world in complex tort litigation seeking $2 billion in damages. Mr. Carlson was able to obtain a favorable resolution at an early stage of the matter so that his client avoided the lengthy and expensive litigation which continued for several years thereafter.

Lead trial counsel defending the seller of a luxury airplane in a suit filed against it seeking $3 million in damages. During trial, Mr. Carlson obtained a ruling from the court that plaintiff had failed to prove its claims and the case was dismissed without defendant having to present its case.

Retained by one of the largest communications companies in Europe to bring its employee handbook and policies into compliance with the law of the District of Columbia and the United States.

Retained by an oral surgeon to advise him on how to open his own practice without violating his former employer's non-compete agreement.

ABOUT MATTHEW
CARLSON, ESQ.
Matthew W. Carlson, Esq., was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and has practiced law in the Washington Metropolitan area since 1994. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Maryland and his juris doctorate from the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He is licensed to practice law in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
Prior to opening Matthew Carlson Law, Mr. Carlson was a partner in an insurance defense litigation firm in Washington, D.C. During his twenty-plus years with that firm, Mr. Carlson represented individuals and businesses in the defense of claims made against them in the state and federal courts of Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. He was lead counsel in numerous civil litigation matters involving a broad range of issues, from personal injury to complex commercial disputes. Mr. Carlson has also argued appellate matters before the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Maryland Court of Appeals and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
In addition, Mr. Carlson has also provided legal advice to businesses of all sizes and types, from mom-and-pop shops to multi-national corporations. Mr. Carlson has acted as outside general counsel to businesses providing assistance on the many issues that face business owners, including, employment terminations, severance agreements, noncompete agreements, employee handbooks, commercial contract drafting, business entity formation, the purchase or sale of a business, commercial leases and business disputes. Mr. Carlson's extensive litigation experience enables him to provide advice that helps his business clients identify possible future issues and take steps to avoid ending up in court.
Mr. Carlson served as the President of the District of Columbia Defense Lawyers Association from 2009-2010 and is a member of the Arlington County Bar Association. He edited the District of Columbia section of DRI’s Products Liability Defenses: A State-By-State Compendium for three years and was previously the editor of the District of Columbia and Maryland sections of the Primerus Defense Practice Institute’s Product Liability Compendium.
Mr. Carlson lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife and three children. In his free time, he coaches youth baseball and has served on the Board of Directors of Arlington Little League and the Board of Directors of NOVA Fellowship of Christian Athletes Baseball.
